How to actually use it for any application

• Place a shortcut on the desktop of the program you want to prefetch every time to load faster.

• Right click the shortcut and click Properties.

• In target add, /prefetch:1 after the application’s path.

• Click Ok.

Now use that shortcut to start the application, you should see faster load time after 1 or 2 uses. I personally use this to make the Photoshop load faster, as it is such a memory hog.

Note: Prefetching too many programs can lead to slow startup time. So, only prefetch application which you use daily.

• Create a shortcut of the program you want to run from the run dialog.

• Place the shortcut in your System Directory (usually C :\).

• Rename the shortcut to something short, unique, and easy to remember.

• For example, you can rename the Photoshop shortcut to phs.

• Just type phs in the run dialog and press enter to start Photoshop.

• Download and install Tweak UI.
  
• Start Tweak UI and click X-Mouse (left pane)
  
• In the right pane, enable the following options:
  • Activation follows Mouse (X-Mouse)
  • Autoraise when activating (optional)
    
• Click OK and close Tweak UI screen

Step1: Disable Simple File Sharing

• Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View->Scroll Down to find 'Use Simple File Sharing'.
• Uncheck it to disable simple file sharing. (see figure)

Step2: Enable your access to another user's folder

• Go to C:\Documents and Settings.
• Right Click on the User's Folder and Select Properties.
• Go to Security Tab, and Click on add.
• Click on Advanced and Click Find now.

• Select your username, click ok and again click ok.
• Select your username and check full control.
• 

Step3: Enable Simple File Sharing

• Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View->Scroll Down to find 'Use Simple File Sharing'.
• Check it to enable simple file sharing.

Now you can access the user's documents folder even if the user has set password and his/her document folder is private.

Note: You'll need to have NTFS file format on your hard drive for this to work, since FAT and FAT32 file systems doesn't have the required functionality.

Method 1: Encrypt the required folder (works only for folders)

To make any file only accessible to us, simple encrypt the folder. To do so, follow the steps:

1. Right click on the folder and go to its properties.


2. Click on Advanced, and check "Encrypt content to secure data".


3. Apply the settings.


4. When asked to confirm attribute changes for folders, select "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files" and click ok.


5. The folder's font color will change to Green to indicate the changes have been made.


6. Now, no one can use (open, rename, delete etc.) files in that folder except you.

Method 2: Disable access to required files or folder (works for both files and folders)

In this method, we simply set that the needed files or folder should only be usable (open, rename, delete etc.) by us and not by anyone else even the system. To do so, follow the steps:

1. First, turn off Simple File Sharing. To do so, Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options.


2. Select the "View" tab. Scroll down and uncheck "Use simple file sharing" and click Ok.


3. Now, Right click on the needed file or folder and go to its properties.


4. Select the "Security" tab.


5. Now, remove all the users from the list except you by selecting them from the list and clicking "Remove". (see figure below)


6. Apply the settings.


7. Turn on Simple File Sharing.

The second scenario is when users have a network and want to access their documents from more than one computer. In that case, you can redirect both their My Documents and Favorites folders to a network location so they have access to them from anywhere.

The table shown below displays the special folders that Windows XP creates after an installation and their default paths.

The first column contains each folder's internal name as Windows XP and other programs know it. The second column contains each folder's default path, which almost always starts with %USERPROFILE%, making these folders part of each user's profile folder.

Changing the Special folder's path to another drive's location

Let see how can we do this. Fire up the Registry Editor and find this key "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders". This is the key where Windows XP stores the location of per-user special folders. Now all you have to do is change the path for the folder that you want to have on some other drive or path.

For Example, if you want the My Documents folder of all the users to be on "D:\All Users\". Simply change the path of the Personal to "D:\All Users\%USERNAME%\My Documents". Now when Windows XP reboots, the document's path for all of the users will be D:\All Users\UserName\My Documents where 'UserName' is the name of the user.

Changing the Special folder's path to a Network Location

Just change the path to something like "\\Server\All Users\%USERNAME%\My Documents" where the Server is the Server, All Users is the folder where you want to place the documents.

All you need is the tool mgadiag.exe and the download url of the file that you want to download. Mgadiag.exe is the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool. Start this tool and check the value of the “Download Center Code”, this should be seven chars consisting of upper case letters and numbers. Remember that code and open the website of the file that you want to download.

A download page looks similar to this one for Internet Explorer 7. All you need to do is append the following value to the url and you will be able to download the file without a WGA check.

Replace the “download center code” with the code that you looked up in the mgadiag.exe tool. This code changes frequently, make sure you have the correct code before starting the downloads.

To sum it up :

1. download mgadiag.exe
2. start mgadiag.exe and look at the download center code
3. visit a download page at microsoft.com
4. append &Hash=”download center code” to the url (example &Hash=6VJPCR9), no quotation marks needed
5. Hit enter

Microsoft is probably going to fix this soon, it is working nevertheless at the moment.

Next is, WTF. WhatTheFont offers different font identifying technology than Identifont. WhatTheFont system accepts image files uploaded by us, then analyzes them and finds the closest match on WhatTheFont site.
Images can be color or black & white, and they don’t have to be very high quality (although that helps). Even a digital photograph of some lettering you like can be accepted. Accuracy of results is unprecedented by previous automatic systems.

Identify Unknown Fonts with WhatTheFont

Finally, if WhatTheFont system is unable to give you a good match of the font you’re looking for, you can then submit your image to WhatTheFont Forum to have your image viewed by font geeks the world over.

Older versions of Microsoft Office or Microsoft Word:

Older versions such as Office XP do not support the docx format because it was not known when they were developed and sold. A simple way to read docx and xlsx files in those applications would be to install the Microsoft Compatibility Pack which adds support for the new file formats.

Open Office

You can use the Open XML Translator for Open Office to be able to read and edit docx files with Open Office.

Online Solution

The docx converter lets you convert docx documents online. This is a pretty good solution if you don’t want to install the previously mentioned add-ons.

Macintosh

You might want to use the Online Solution above or download a desktop widget from the same developers. If you happen to use Microsoft Office on your Mac you might want to take a look at the Microsoft Office Open XML File Format Converter for Mac.

If you are a web developer, you probably use a ton of WebDev add-ons to make work easier. You can create your own development profile with all that extra baggage. You can then save your default profile to be lightweight and for personal use. This way, you won’t have all of those extensions and add-ons for webdev in the way when you just want to check the Red Sox score. And, it will keep your bookmarks organized. You can have a personal set and a set for development sites.

Do you watch lots of videos on YouTube, and all those crazy sites (CollegeHumor, Break, etc.)? All of those nice extensions for rich media can get in the way. You can create a video profile for your media viewing purposes only.

There are many other uses for multiple profile. For example, a profile just for testing out add-ons and extensions. A profile souped up for contacting people, fully loaded with gTalk in the sidebar, Gmail Manager checking your inbox and meebo open for chat.

Create the Firefox Shortcut

Let’s create a new profile now. Create a new shortcut to Firefox. Right-click it > Properties. Go to the end of the string in the Target field and add the following after that end quote:

-p PROFILENAME -no-remote

Replace PROFILENAME with a new unique name for your new profile.

The -no-remote flag, according to Firefox documentation “[e]nables Firefox to run with multiple profiles; used with -P. Firefox 2 and later.”

Here’s the example I used: -p development -no-remote

Profile Manager

Double-click on the new shortcut. The first time you try it, the new profile won’t exist, so it will open the Profile Manager. From here, click Create Profile and give it the same name of the one you used in the shortcut. NOTE: it’s case-sensitive.

Make sure you choose Don’t Ask at Startup. This will prevent the Profile Manager from opening next time and will launch the profile in the shortcut.

Now that you have the profile created, launch the shortcut and your new profile will open up. Customize it as you want.

However, that’s a real pain and takes up too much time! There’s a much easier way to go about doing this and it doesn’t require downloading a single conversion program! Of course, the video still has to be converted, but you can use a very cool free online file conversion web service called Zamzar.

Zamzar is by far the best place to go for any type of file conversion you need. Using Zamzar, you can convert any text document to another other type such as to DOC, PDF, HTML, TXT, RTF, etc. You can convert between all image formats also, including JPEG, GIF, PNG, ICO, PCX, PS, TIFF, etc. And that’s not the end of it! You can convert your music files to and from AAC, MP3, FLAC, M4A, RA, RAM, WAV, and WMA. And finally, for our purposes here, you can convert to and from all video formats including AVI, 3GP, FLV, MP4, MPG, WMV, VOB and more!

To get started, first go to the video you want to download, let’s say from YouTube:

Go ahead and copy that link onto your clipboard (Cntrl + C) and then open the link to Zamzar that I posted above. When using Zamzar, they actually have two “pages” for converting, a regular one if you go to Zamzar.com and one that will convert only videos from video sharing sites at Zamzar.com/url/, so make sure you go to the second link.

Paste the link into the text box for Step 1. Click on Add URL and then choose the file type you want to convert it to. Scroll down and choose MPG. You can also choose WMV, MOV, etc also since PowerPoint supports most of these formats. Type in your email address and then click Convert and watch the magic!

The upload/conversion process is pretty fast and it only took about 1 minute for a 5MB video. You should receive an email with a link to your file, download the video and now it can be inserted into PowerPoint.

To insert a video or movie file into PowerPoint, click on the Insert menu item and choose Movies and Sounds and then Movie from File.

Go to the location where you saved the converted Zamzar video, select the video and click Insert! And that’s it! You have successfully inserted a video from YouTube into PowerPoint. Any questions, post a comment!
